In week 1 I asked each Kindy class that they thought science was. Here is what they said....
In Term 1 Kindergarten will be investigating movement. This unit is the foundation of their future study of physics. Students will be introduced to terms such as "force" and through a series of investigations, they will explore how people, objects, toys and animals can move in different ways depending on their size and shape. Students will also learn about a "push" and "pull" force and how this can act on something to make it move.
Fun activities we have been working on together to learn about movement and force
All these activities come from the excellent BBC Science Clips website. We will be using more of these clips and others from BBC Bitesize in units during the year.
Moving our Bodies on the playground equipment
During this lesson Kindy students watch a partner as they played on the various parts of the playground equipment. We call this "science playing" as while we are the observer we are carefully watching what are partner is doing and while we are playing we are thinking about what body parts we are using and what actions we have to take to move down the slide, climb up the climbing wall, swing from one end of the monkey bars to the other....See the table we created when we got back to the classroom showing everything we found out. The students then drew a detailed sketch of their partner in action!
