Pushes and Pulls
Year 2 is studying forces and motion this term. We are looking forward to a fun term of hands-on discovery.
Forces of Flight
Stage 1 was lucky enough to participate in a workshop with Bill Bannister, a very experienced pilot (and also a school parent) where they learnt about all the forces involved in keeping aircraft moving through the air. Using props, demonstrations, volunteers and very cool photographs, the students learnt about the importance of wing design, flaps, aierons, aircraft shape and - in a great link to our Term 2 unit - the exciting new materials being used in the latest aircraft to improve their efficiency and speed. To cap off a really interesting and stimulating session, the students participated in a mini Paper planes challenge! Great introduction to the CCPS paper plane challenge coming in Term 2!! Thank you Bill - we really appreciate your time and effort in making the learning come alive for our students.
Discovering Forces .....
Year 2 has enjoyed discovering how forces are involved in every movement in our world - in the air, on the ground and in the water .... and definitely in the playground! We have used paper helicopters to investigate air resistance and floated all manner of things to find out about buoyancy. Students used Lego WeDo robots to investigate speed and friction on different surfaces and the effect of size of wheels on momentum. The term finished with an interactive workshop with Fizzics Education exploring the science of toys. Let's hope Term 2 can live up to the excitement of Term 1 Science!
